چکیده

Background: The effect of volatile anaesthetics on plasma S100β protein has not been welldocumented in cardiac surgery patients. The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of sevoflurane or isoflurane anaesthesia on plasma S100β concentration in patients undergoing elective, uncomplicated coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Methods: One hundred thirty seven patients were prospectively randomized and allocated into three groups: A – patients, who didn’t receive volatile anaesthetics, B – who received sevoflurane and C – who received isoflurane. S100β was measured during anaesthesia and postoperative days 1 and 2. Results: In all patients, S100β increased during anaesthesia and at the postoperative day 1 and 2. In group A, S100β increased during anaesthesia and postoperative days 1 and 2 but in groups B and C only during anaesthesia. Plasma S100β concentrations were significantly higher in group A than in group B and C. Conclusions: 1) cardiac surgery resulted in S100β elevation, 2) isoflurane and sevoflurane significantly reduced plasma S100β concentrations.

Volatile anaesthetic myocardial protection: a review of the current literature

Ischaemic preconditioning is a powerful innate adaptive phenomenon whereby brief periods of sublethal ischaemia result in marked tolerance to subsequent lethal ischaemia. Halogenated anaesthetics have been shown to mimic ischaemic preconditioning, modifying and attenuating ischaemia reperfusion injury. This review aims to present the current animal and human data, discuss the possible mechanism...

S100 and S100β: biomarkers of cerebral damage in cardiac surgery with or without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass

OBJECTIVE The present study is to describe the clinical impact of S100 and S100β for the evaluation of cerebral damage in cardiac surgery with or without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). METHODS Quantitative results of S100 and S100β reported in the literature of the year range 1990-2014 were collected, screened and analyzed. RESULTS Cerebrospinal fluid and serum S100 levels showed ...

The Impact of Volatile Anesthetic Choice on Postoperative Outcomes of Cardiac Surgery: A Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the impact of volatile anesthetic choice on clinically relevant outcomes of patients undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS Major databases were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing volatile anesthetics (isoflurane versus sevoflurane) in cardiac surgery. Study-level characteristics, intraoperative events, and postoperative outcomes were...

Perioperative Elevation in Cell-Free DNA Levels in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: Possible Contribution of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps to Perioperative Renal Dysfunction

Background. This study aimed to determine the perioperative change in serum double-strand DNA (dsDNA) as a marker potentially reflecting neutrophil extracellular trap concentration in samples from patients undergoing cardiac surgery and to analyze a relationship between serum dsDNA concentrations and perioperative renal dysfunction. Methods. Serum dsDNA concentrations in samples that were colle...
